2009 – Satellite Television – Snapshot
DTH television’s $## billion in estimated 2009 revenue constitutes ##% of the commercial satellite services sector. North American DTH companies DIRECTV and DISH Network continue to lead the marketplace with combined estimated total revenues of $## billion in 2009. The remaining $## billion comes from revenue of non-U.S. DTH providers. Analysts predict that the number of worldwide DTH subscribers will exceed ## million by 2018.
2009 – Space Stations – Snapshot
The largest in-space platform is the International Space Station. NASA, the main contributor to the ISS, received $## billion for the station in fiscal year (FY) 2010 compared to $## billion approved by Congress in FY 2009. This funding does not include flight or ground operations costs of shuttle flights to and from the ISS. During 2009, two major modules were added: the final truss segment and a section of the solar array. The truss acts as the junction through which external utilities, such as power, communications, and ammonia for thermal control systems, are routed to the pressurized modules.
2009 – Launch Industry – Snapshot
In 2009, ## orbital launches were conducted, carrying ## payloads into space, including cargo, satellites, and other types of spacecraft. This marked a notable increase from the 2008 total of ## launches carrying 106 payloads, and continued a five-year trend of annual increases in launch activity. The 2005 total of ## launches and ## payloads began a period of #% average annual increase in launches. Of the ## launches in 2009, ## were conducted by commercial launch providers and ## were non-commercial.
2009 – European Military Space Budget – Snapshot
In Europe, industrial revenues from the sale and production of military-space related products and services have been steadily increasing over recent years. Based on trends in past revenue from European industry’s sales to governments, it can be estimated that European industrial revenue in 2009 from sales related to government military space programs will reach €## billion (US$## billion). In France, the government has announced plans to increase the annual military space budget to €## million (US$## million) by 2014, a ##% increase from the 2008 level of €## million (US$## million).
2009 – Russian Government Space Budget – Snapshot
Russian space spending increased dramatically in 2009. The planned budget for Roscosmos, the Russian Federal Space Agency, was more than ## billion rubles (US$## billion). This amount constitutes an increase of ##% from the previous year’s budget of ## billion rubles and represents approximately ##% of Russia’s ## trillion ruble (US$## billion) planned 2009 federal expenditures. This increase signifies both a positive view of the Russian space program within the Russian government and increased Russian government revenue due to oil markets.
2009 – Ground Networks – Snapshot
Ground stations are an essential but often overlooked segment of space infrastructure. Ground stations connect satellites to terrestrial networks and collect satellite information ranging from tracking and telemetry to imagery and scientific data. The stations also upload information to spacecraft, including command and control data, software upgrades, and other mission-critical instructions. Employees at some ground stations process, analyze, and distribute satellite-based data, products, and services.
2009 – Indian Government Space Budget – Snapshot
For FY 2009, the budget of India’s Department of Space (DOS), which includes funding for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and several smaller autonomous agencies, was ## billion rupees (US$## billion), an increase of ##% from the previous year’s budget of ## billion rupees.[
2009 – United Kingdom Government Space Budget – Snapshot
In the United Kingdom, responsibility for space activities is distributed across several agencies. Through 2009, space activities in the United Kingdom were coordinated by the British National Space Centre (BNSC), although individual agencies retain control of their own budgets. In December 2009, Britain’s Science Minister announced a decision to establish a dedicated British space agency to direct the country’s space policy, although the exact date this agency will begin to operate is unknown.
2009 – Spanish Government Space Budget – Snapshot
The Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA), the primary organization responsible for space activities in Spain, oversaw a budget of €## million (US$## million) in 2009. This budget included €## million (US$## million) in appropriations from Spain’s national budget, and €## million (US$## million) in expected revenue from other sources, including INTA’s own commercial operations. The 2009 INTA appropriation from the Spanish national budget is essentially unchanged from the previous year.

The Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI), Italy’s space agency, managed a budget of €## million (US$## million) in 2009, excluding contributions made to ESA. This represents a ##% percent increase from ASI-only spending totaling €## million (US$## million) in 2008. Italy’s contribution to ESA totaled €## million (US$## million) in 2009, an increase of ##% from 2008.
